§ 10. Mr. Emrys Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will introduce legislation which will prevent 1009 landlords resuming possession of land without giving reasonable notice.
§ Lord John HopeNo, Sir. Resumption in pursuance of a stipulation in a lease is governed—and must, in my right hon. Friend's view, continue to be governed—by the contractual agreement between landlord and tenant.
§ Mr. HughesIs the Joint Under-Secretary aware that a farmer in my constituency recently received a notice for resumption of two of his best fields—ten acres—and that, on the same day, the landlord ploughed up the land for trees? Does he think that that is right?
§ Lord John HopeIt would be wrong of me, I think, to express any opinion on that case. An arbiter having been called for, the matter is really sub judice.
