§ 28. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement in respect of the present conditions in Aden and the Protectorate.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydThe new constitutional proposals in Aden Colony have received general public approval, although some points are still under consideration. The trade unions in Aden are reported to be contemplating a general strike soon; it is believed their contention may be that the immigration policy of the Aden Government is not sufficiently strict.
As regards Aden Protectorate the Yemenis are still causing provocation on the frontier. They have been firing guns of various calibres across the frontier at subjects of the Protectorate Rulers and at their and our security forces; they have been fomenting dissidence within the Protectorate States. All necessary measures will continue to be taken to protect the Rulers of the frontier States and their people from this continuous aggression.
§ Mr. SorensenIs any attempt being made, or is an attempt likely to be made in the near future, to secure reconsideration of the cause of the incidents to which the right hon. Gentleman has referred?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydWe are always anxious, of course, to bring about a calmer situation on every frontier. Our record in this case proves that.
