§ 29. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many hospitals for mental illness and infectious diseases there are in the South Cameroons; how many training centres exist in that area for medical practitioners, pharmacists, health inspectors and others engaged in medical, health or nursing services; and what steps are being taken to meet more adequately the need for hospital, medical and nursing services in the area.
§ Mr. ProfumoI have asked the Governor-General of the Federation of Nigeria about this and will write to the hon. Member when I receive a reply.
§ Mr. SorensenHas any attempt been made to draw the attention of the authorities there to the quite inadequate medical and similar facilities with a view to meeting these needs?
§ Mr. ProfumoThe medical facilities which exist there are being improved as time goes on. A grant of £139,000 from C.D. and W. funds towards the cost of development of medical and health services in the Southern Cameroons during the period 1955–60 was approved during 1955–56.
