§ 26. Mrs. L. Jegerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement on the future of Cyprus.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydI am afraid I have nothing at present to add to the reply given on 5th March by my hon. Friend the Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affiairs.
§ Mrs. JegerIs it too much to expect the right hon. Gentleman to have something to say about Cyprus very soon? Does he realise that he is putting an intolerable strain on all these people who want law and order kept in Cyprus? Would not it be a good idea if he started talking with representatives of the Cypriot people instead of getting mixed up with all these foreign Governments?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydIf the problem were as simple as that, it would have been solved long ago.
§ Mr. C. DaviesI am sure that the right hon. Gentleman realises that hon. Members have shown very great restraint about the anxious position in the island. Can he indicate when he may be able to make a more definite statement about the future of these people?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydI assure the right hon. and learned Gentleman that I am anxious to be able to do so, and that I will do so as soon as it is possible to make a worth-while statement.
