HC Deb 18 March 1958 vol 584 cc1073-4
21. Mr. Grimond

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will take steps to establish processing or light industry in Shetland.

Sir D. Eccles

It is not easy to find an industry which might be expected to settle in Shetland, but my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and I will continue to do what we can to encourage any suitable new project which comes forward.

Mr. Grimond

Is the Minister aware that the imposition of American restrictions on woollen goods has caused considerable difficulties, which have been added to those already existing? Will he consider taking some new powers to encourage industry in the Highland areas, as throughout those areas his existing powers have not led to any noticeable increase in industry?

Sir D. Eccles

We have protested very strongly to the American Government about their action with regard to the wool tariff, and they have undertaken to review the whole question.
