HC Deb 10 March 1958 vol 584 cc24-5
42. Mr. Sydney Irving

asked the Minister of Health, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what steps he is taking to organise research into the prevention, alleviation and possible cure of incontinency among the aged.

Mr. Walker-Smith

Incontinency in the elderly is a symptom of many forms of mental or physical disability. Research is already in progress on the major underlying conditions, but incontinency among the elderly as such can only be considered and treated as a symptom of the patient's general condition.

Mr. Irving

Will the right hon. and learned Gentleman bear in mind that any advance in this respect would bring considerable relief and a sense of health to many old people, and would reduce the burden on those who have the residential care of old people? In view of the increasing proportion of the aged in our community, will the Minister take steps to co-ordinate, as well as increase, the amount of research now taking place?

Mr. Walker-Smith

The research must be into the diseases of which this condition is symptomatic, such as diseases of the central nervous system and urogenital tract. It is not possible to conduct research into the condition of itself.

Dr. D. Johnson

Is my right hon. and learned Friend aware that there is a great deal of information available on this condition in the forward-looking geriatric units, where they mobilise their patients instead of leaving them in bed for long periods? Will he look into that aspect and circulate such information as is available in this respect?

Mr. Walker-Smith

Of course, if I have any information which I feel can be generally helpful, I will consider circulating it if appropriate.

Mrs. Jeger

May I ask the Minister whether, research apart, he is satisfied that enough of the public health authorities are using their powers to provide special laundry facilities for soiled bed linen of this type, which ordinary laundries will not take, which could be of tremendous assistance to people who are trying to look after aged relatives in their own homes?

Mr. Walker-Smith

This Question relates to research, but I will look into the other matter to which the hon. Lady has referred.
