HC Deb 10 March 1958 vol 584 c11
39. Mr. V. Yates

asked the Minister of Health on what date the University Grants Committee completed its deliberations regarding the proposed new dental hospital in Birmingham; and whether the provision for this hospital will be included in the 1958–59 programme.

Mr. Walker-Smith

The Committee's recommendations on student entry following the McNair report are now being considered by the Ministers concerned. I cannot yet say when this scheme will be ready to start.

Mr. Yates

But is it not the fact that the Minister and his Parliamentary Secretary have been giving me this answer now for a very long time? This has been under consideration for many months, so is it not reasonable to expect that the negotiations should be brought to an end and that some hope should be given to this hospital in Birmingham?

Mr. Walker-Smith

The recommendations of the University Grants Committee were received on 18th February, which is less than a month ago, and their effect is being considered by the health departments and the Treasury at the present time.
