HC Deb 06 March 1958 vol 583 cc1320-1
17. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give an assurance, in view of rent increases to many people living on fixed incomes who do not qualify for supplementary grants on National Assistance, that he will undertake to restore the Income Tax relief in the bands of income which operated in 1955–56.

Mr. Simon

I have noted my hon. Friend's suggestion, but I cannot anticipate my right hon. Friend's Budget statement.

Dame Irene Ward

Will my hon. and learned Friend bear in mind that everybody is trying to find a way to help those on fixed incomes? Will he convey to his right hon. Friend that this would be a way of helping the small fixed income groups? Will he also bear in mind that I am delighted that he cannot anticipate the Budget statement provided that I get my way in the Budget?

Mr. Simon

I noted both parts of my hon. Friend's observations.
