HC Deb 04 March 1958 vol 583 c955
29. Mr. Kimball

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how long it took the Nature Conservancy to complete its survey of red deer in Scotland; and the estimated cost of the survey.

Mr. Maclay

I am informed that the cost up to 31st March next of the survey of Red Deer in Scotland which started in 1953 will be £12,600. The survey is not yet complete, but the area so far covered is 1,700,000 acres, equivalent to more than half the acreage of deer forests in Scotland.

Mr. Kimball

Is my right hon. Friend satisfied that this is being carried on in the most efficient manner and that full use is being made of the services which would be willingly given by local keepers and stalkers?

Mr. Maclay

As far as I know, this has been done with great efficiency and with the co-operation of landowners, stalkers and everybody concerned.
