HC Deb 04 March 1958 vol 583 cc952-3
24. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that in the United States of America, Canada, Africa an the continent of Europe there is a great and growing demand for Scottish frozen fish; and if he will take steps to empower the White Fish Authority to finance a publicity campaign to increase this potential source of wealth for Scotland.

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. John Maclay)

The White Fish Authority's existing powers enable it to promote the export of white fish and it is in close touch with the industry about the markets available overseas.

Mr. Hughes

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, excellent though the work of the White Fish Authority is in many respects, its publicity campaign in this country and in other countries, to which this Question refers, is not sufficiently extensive? Will he do something to extend it?

Mr. Maclay

Powers exist under Section 41 of the Sea Fish Industry Act, 1951, and I am sure that the Authority is very conscious of the need for this work.
