HC Deb 26 June 1958 vol 590 c601
42. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many Africans from Zanzibar are at present studying at Makerere University College; and how many have bursary scholarships to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Profumo

At present one African from Zanzibar is studying at Makerere. One hundred and twenty-six Zanzibaris are studying in this country, but I cannot say how many are Africans. Of these twenty-four are holders of Government bursaries or scholarships.

Mr. Johnson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that out of this large figure only one student is an African? Is not this lamentable in view of the fact that there are 200,000 Africans in Zanzibar? Will the hon. Gentleman pay special attention to African education overseas?

Mr. Profumo

It is because the Zanzibar Government recognise that the position as a whole is not satisfactory that they set up the Committee to which I referred the other day.
