§ 39. Sir W. Anstruther-Grayasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether his attention has been drawn to a complaint by Coldstream Town Council about the frequent incidence of water-main fractures owing to the heavy traffic which passes through the town; whether he is aware that this has necessitated repeated expenditure on digging up and renewing pipes; and what action he proposes.
§ Mr. MaclayI have received an inquiry from the Border Burghs' Convention about the protection available in law to Coldstream Town Council against damage caused by very heavy traffic passing through the Burgh. As the main road through Coldstream is used for the movement of heavy indivisible loads, I am consulting with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, who administers the regulations governing such movements.
§ Sir W. Anstruther-GrayWhile thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask whether we can take it that some helpful action is likely to result?
§ Mr. MaclayThe whole question is rather complicated and I think it may be helpful if I write to my hon. and gallant Friend about it.
