HC Deb 23 June 1958 vol 590 c2
2. Sir I. Fraser

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much meat and other food has been lost or damaged as a result of the London dock strike.

Mr. John Hare

I have not been informed of any loss or damage to meat. It is not possible to estimate closely the damage to other perishable foodstuffs, but I am informed that some two hundred to three hundred tons of vegetables and fruit may have to be condemned and there will be other losses due to deterioration. Damage has been suffered by butter and cheese lying in barges in the river, but its extent cannot be assessed until it has been unloaded.

Sir I. Fraser

Has it all been cleared now?

Mr. Hare

Our latest reports are that the docks are back at work and that clearances should be fairly soon.
