HC Deb 18 June 1958 vol 589 cc1095-6
18. Mr. J. Howard

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether the shortage of radio officers is restricted to the marine radio companies; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Neave

As the marine radio companies provide the great majority of radio officers, they have, naturally, borne the brunt of the shortage. I understand that the position has slightly eased since the statement which I made on 14th May in answer to a previous Question by my hon. Friend.

Mr. Howard

I thank my hon. Friend for his reply, but may I again ask him to draw to the attention of the marine radio companies the circumstances of a constituent of mine, who qualified in Southampton as a radio operator but who has been unable to find employment, presumably because he is coloured?

Mr. Neave

As my hon. Friend knows, I am doing my best about that case.
