§ 33 Mr. D. Jonesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, (1) when the improved pension schemes for Windward Island pensioners, which he discussed with the Governor of the Windward Islands in 1957, are to come into operation;
(2) whether he is aware that the matter of improved pensions for Government pensioners in Dominica was discussed between the Governor of the Windward Islands and a deputation of four of the pensioners in the latter months of 1957, and that at this meeting an undertaking was given that such improved pensions would become operative at an early date; and if he will make a statement on the steps which are being taken to implement this undertaking;
(3) whether he is aware that there is a general opinion amongst the Government pensioners in the Windward Islands, and particularly in Dominica, that the delay in implementing the undertaking to improve the pension rates, as agreed in 1957, is due to failure on the part of Her Majesty's Government to give the necessary sanction to the authorities on the spot; and what steps he is taking to allay this disquiet by publishing among those affected the true facts of the case.
§ Mr. ProfumoI have now approved further cost of living increases for Windward Islands pensioners who retired prior to the 1st January, 1952. These increases will be payable with effect from 1st January, 1957.
§ Mr. JonesMay I thank the Under-Secretary for that reply? It will make some restitution for the long delay?
