38. Mrs. Butlerasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what steps he 208 has taken to advise shopkeepers selling wrapped sweets, ice-cream, and other packages, the outer wrappings of which are often removed in or near shop premises, that they should provide litter bins in a prominent position in order to help in the campaign against litter.
§ Mr. BevinsMy right hon. Friend has not approached shopkeepers on this matter. Litter bins are already provided at some shops, and in at least one case they are supplied by the makers of ice cream. I hope this good example will be widely followed.
Mrs. ButlerWould not the Minister consider sending a circular to these shopkeepers so as to encourage the many to follow the example of the few and provide litter bins at points where litter is created?
§ Mr. BevinsIn the first place, it might be better to tackle this matter from the angle of the manufacturers than that the shopkeepers, who rather naturally take the view that it is something for the local authorities themselves to consider. This is what we are doing, in co-operation with the "Keep Britain Tidy" group. I am obliged to the hon. Lady for her suggestion.
