HC Deb 22 July 1958 vol 592 c215
42. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what official discussions he has had with the Governor of Gambia during his visit to London for a revision of the Constitution of Gambia.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd)

The former Governor, Sir Percy Wyn-Harris, left the Colony on retirement in April. The new Governor, Sir Edward Windley, arrived in the Gambia last month. Before he left, I naturally discussed with him the problems of the country.

Mr. Brockway

Would it be possible for the right hon. Gentleman to indicate to the House whether proposals are now being made for a revision of the Constitution with a view to the advance towards self-government?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The people of Gambia have many other interests, apart from constitutional ones, and I think that the new Governor should be allowed to look round before he reports to me on all matters.
