HC Deb 22 July 1958 vol 592 cc214-5
41. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what opportunities are provided for Africans in Nigeria to train for the civil and medical services in preparation for the independence of their territory.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. John Profumo)

A great many pre-service and in-service training schemes are being operated by all the Nigerian Governments to train Africans for posts at all levels in the public service.

Mr. Brockway

In view of the fact that Nigeria is likely to receive its independence within two years, and also of the great historic importance of this as the largest remaining British Colony, will the Under-Secretary take particular steps with the Governments of the three Regions to see that they have a staff which will be able to administer the country when that independence is gained?

Mr. Profumo

I am sure that all the Governments in Nigeria appreciate the need for this and are doing everything they can.
