asked the Postmaster-General when the North Shields telephone exchange will be converted to the automatic system.

The building of the new exchange will start in October next, and it is hoped to complete the conversion to automatic working, with subscriber trunk dialling facilities, by the end of 1961. My hon. Friend's constituents will be among the earlier telephone subscribers to enjoy the advantages of the new system.
