HC Deb 07 July 1958 vol 591 c17
26. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Minister of Health how many psychiatric day hospitals are in operation; and how many of these are outside the four metropolitan regions.

Mr. Walker-Smith

There are 25 day centres providing psychiatric treatment; 17 are outside the metropolitan regions.

Mr. Robinson

Does the Minister not agree that the day hospital is no longer experimental but a proven method of keeping patients out of mental hospitals? Will he do all he can to encourage the development of the day hospital?

Mr. Walker-Smith

Yes, I certainly welcome any measure which can reduce the burden of in-patient treatment. The actual provision is a matter for regional hospital boards.
