§ 35. Mr. Jannerasked the Minister of Health what action he proposes to take on the report by Dr. Percy Stocks to the British Empire Cancer Campaign following his survey of cancer incidence in North Wales and Liverpool; and whether he will arrange for similar surveys to be carried out officially in other parts of the country.
§ Mr. Walker-SmithI understand that cancer research under official auspices is already devoting much attention to epidemiological studies of the causes of cancer with similar aims to those pursued by Dr. Stocks. I do not think that the publication of his results, interesting as they are, call for any special action by me.
§ Mr. JannerI assume that the right hon. and learned Gentleman has read the report of Dr. Stocks. Is he not satisfied from that report that it is highly essential that similar investigations should take place throughout the country so that a definite decision can be reached, particularly on the question of smoking and the pollution of the atmosphere by smoke in various places?
§ Mr. Walker-SmithYes, Sir. As the hon. Member knows, matters of research are for my noble and learned Friend the Lord President, who I have no doubt will take appropriate note of what the hon. Gentleman has said.
