§ Mr. ProfumoThere are twenty-two primary schools with a total enrolment of 4,952 in Pemba at present. The provision of secondary education on the island is one of the matters to be considered by the recently appointed Committee on Education.
§ Mr. J. JohnsonCan the Under-Secretary confirm that there are 100,000 people in Pemba and that the number is increasing year by year? The figure of only 4,000 at primary schools is very small, and I hope he can give an assurance that he will do something about this matter, because it is not only inconvenient for pupils from Pemba to go to Zanzibar, but it is also befitting the people in Pemba that they should have these schools.
