HC Deb 30 January 1958 vol 581 c485
8. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made in the last two years in making British Honduras less dependent on imported foodstuffs.

Mr. Profumo

A pilot scheme for the mechanical cultivation of rice has been most successful, and has now reached the stage where it is ready for expansion. Sufficient land and irrigation are now available to produce all the rice required in the Territory. The Government have also assisted the livestock industry, both by providing finance for improvement of pasture and by subsidising the import of animals of approved stock.
