HC Deb 27 January 1958 vol 581 c32
46. Mr. Palmer

asked the Prime Minister what action the Government proposes to take on the Reports of the Fleck Committees which have now investigated the organisation and the health and safety arrangements of the Atomic Energy Authority.

Mr. Maudling

I have been asked to reply.

With regard to the report on organisation, I would refer to the reply given on 24th January by my right hon. Friend the Lord Privy Seal to my hon. Friend the Member for Clitheroe (Mr. Fort). The Government and the Atomic Energy Authority are working out how best to implement the recommendations of the report on health and safety.

Mr. Palmer

Whilst thanking the right hon. Gentleman for that answer, may I ask whether the Government are giving any consideration to the establishment of an independent inspectorate to check the safety of all nuclear establishments?

Mr. Maudling

I think it is right that the Authority in the first instance should study this report on health and safety. Having completed its study, it will be consulting the Government about it.
