HC Deb 23 January 1958 vol 580 cc1253-4
54. Mr. Harold Davies

asked the Prime Minister what approaches were made from the United States of America asking the Atomic Energy Authority and the Government to withhold from the British public the fact that the Atomic Energy Authority had demonstrated that deuterium nuclei can be fused together and controlled.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I have been asked to reply.

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Chigwell (Mr. Biggs-Davison) on 21st January.

Mr. Davies

I apologise for not remembering that Answer at the moment, and so may I ask the right hon. Gentleman if it is true that we have to supply information on our atomic energy research while the United States of America, under the McMahon Act, are not prepared to give a quid pro quo to Britain?

Mr. Butler

As I said in answer to my hon. Friend the Member for Chigwell, there is being published on Friday a very considerable degree of scientific information by agreement with the United States, and they are simultaneously publishing some themselves.
