HC Deb 27 February 1958 vol 583 cc535-6
51. Mr. Gower

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much of the£15 million to be spent on university building projects in accordance with authority given by him, will be spent on such projects in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Simon

Following my right hon. Friend's statement of 20th February, the University Grants Committee will be discussing with all the universities their proposals for new buildings to be started in the years 1960–63, but it will be some time before the Committee is in a position to draw up provisional programmes.

Mr. Gower

Will my hon. and learned Friend give an assurance that my right hon. Friend the Minister for Welsh Affairs will be taken into consultation at all stages on this matter?

Mr. Simon

No, Sir. This is a matter for the University Grants Committee. I am certain that the Committee can be relied upon to allocate these resources with due regard both to national needs and the requirements of individual universities.
