§ 13. Mr. G. Jegerasked the President of the Board of Trade whether the trade talks with Spain have now been concluded; and what agreement has been reached.
§ Sir D. EcclesYes, Sir. The talks were concluded on 19th February. Both sides envisaged an increase in trade in 522 both directions in 1958. Increased facilities have been secured for many United Kingdom goods which are subject to quotas in Spain.
§ Mr. JegerCan the right hon. Gentleman tell us whether there will be an improvement in the arrangement for this year compared with last year when about 50 per cent. more was purchased from Spain than Spain purchased from Britain? Can he say whether during these talks any mention was made of Spain lifting the discriminatory measures against Gibraltar?
§ Sir D. EcclesI hope that more trade will flow. It should do so, because this is a better arrangement. Certainly the Gibraltar trade was mentioned during the talks.
