HC Deb 27 February 1958 vol 583 cc522-3
15. Miss Burton

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that some manufacturers, having been awarded a seal of quality on one product out of several, have so worded their advertisements that it seems as if the seal applies to the whole range; and if he will set up a committee to inquire into this practice.

Sir D. Eccles

I have seen only one allegation of this deplorable practice. This is not sufficient to justify a committee of inquiry.

Miss Burton

While I am glad that the President of the Board of Trade has found at least one deplorable instance, may I ask him whether he thinks that, on the whole matter of certification, it would be a good idea if all bodies concerned had to establish their independence and authority, publish the criteria used, and reinforce their certificates with adequate inspection?

Sir D. Eccles

I should have to consider that. It is rather a large topic.
