HC Deb 27 February 1958 vol 583 cc536-7
53. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is now able to state what arrangements have been made with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for payment by the Federal German Government of the support costs of the British forces in Germany.

Mr. Maudling

This matter is still under consideration by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and I have as yet nothing to add to my reply on 20th February.

Mr. Fletcher

Is the report in today's Press correct in stating that the Germans have made an offer of£45 million? If so, what conditions have been attached to it?

Mr. Maudling

As the hon. Member will realise, these discussions are very important. While they are going on, it would be unwise of me to make any more detailed statement than I have done.
