HC Deb 26 February 1958 vol 583 cc356-7
22. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of people in Wales in employment on the latest convenient date; the comparable figure for the same day in 1948; and the number of notified vacancies on the latest convenient date.

Mr. Iain Macleod

It is estimated that at the end of 1957 there were about 925,000 employees in employment in Wales. Precisely comparable figures were not obtained in 1948, but the available statistics indicate that between the end of 1948 and the end of 1957 there was an increase of about 30,000. The number of vacancies notified to employment exchanges in Wales and remaining unfilled at 8th January, 1958, was 7,284.

23. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Labour how many people were in employment in the United Kingdom on the latest convenient date, the comparable number for the same period in 1948, and the latest number of notified vacancies.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The latest figures are for Great Britain. It is estimated that at the end of 1957 there were about 21,510,000 employees in employment in Great Britain compared with 19,950,000 at the end of 1948. The number of vacancies notified to employment ex-changes in Great Britain and remaining unfilled at 8th January, 1958, was 220,047.

25. Mr. E. Johnson

asked the Minister of Labour the change in the total number of persons in civil employment between 31st October, 1951, and 31st December, 1957.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The total number of employees increased during this period by 840,000 to a total of 21,510,000.
