HC Deb 18 February 1958 vol 582 cc1011-2
57. Mr. Skeffington

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the Government of Tanganyika are selling to a private company their newspapers in Swahili.

Mr. Profumo

The Tanganyika Government are transferring the ownership of their three Swahili newspapers to Tanganyika National Newspapers Limited. This is an independent company whose overall directions will be in the hands of a board of trustees, which will hold all the shares.

Mr. Skeffington

In view of the fact that these newspapers have been regarded as a very useful medium for public relations in Tanganyika, and as, according to the Answer, they are to be transferred to an independent company—although it has trustees—can the hon. Member say why the change has been made?

Mr. Profumo

Because there was a suspicion in some quarters about control by the Government. I think that the change will represent an improvement.
