asked the Minister of Education why double glazing is not encouraged in new schools in order that fuel costs for subsequent heating may be reduced.

Because we have good reason to believe that the extra cost of double glazing would outweigh any savings in fuel costs.

Commander Maitland

Have experiments been carried out in this matter? Is it not really being rather penny wise and pound foolish of the Government to try to put more weight on to local government expenditure?

An experiment has been carried out by the Ministry's Development Group which has confirmed our view, but several bodies are continuing research into this matter. I will keep my hon. and gallant Friend informed, and I shall be glad to consider carefully any evidence he likes to bring before me about this point.
