HC Deb 12 February 1958 vol 582 cc393-4
57. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the result of the inquiries made in respect of allegations made by Mr. Don White, now resident in the Borough of Leyton, of his maltreatment by Panamanian officials; and what redress for Mr. White has been secured from the Panamanian Government.

Mr. Ian Harvey

Her Majesty's Ambassador took this case up personally with the Panamanian Minister for Foreign Affairs on 3rd January. The Minister undertook to make inquiries and to send a reply as soon as his inquiries had been completed. This reply has not yet been received.

Mr. Sorensen

Can the hon. Gentleman say when replies are likely to be received? Seeing that this matter has now gone on a long time and my constituent apparently received very serious maltreatment without any warranty at all when he was at the frontier, can the hon. Gentleman expedite the inquiries?

Mr. Harvey

Yes. There is no doubt that Mr. White was maltreated by Panamanian officials. His injuries were seen by two members of our Embassy. We will expedite this matter.
