§ 4. Mr. Jannerasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether the type of new permanent television 1162 traffic controls are to be installed in cities other than Durham; and what is the cost of these control points, compared with the normal traffic light control.
§ Mr. NugentConditions in Durham are exceptional, and I know of no plans to use similar equipment elsewhere. The television installation cost about £3,700. Normal traffic light signals would not function here at all.
§ Mr. JannerWas the hon. Member wrong when he said at the time of the installation of this television traffic control that it would be very useful in other places? Has he changed his mind about that? Does not he think that this arrangement might be used in many places with considerable advantage?
§ Mr. NugentNothing in my reply closes the door to it being used elsewhere. It may be useful elsewhere, but only in somewhat exceptional circumstances. We shall certainly watch the Durham experiment to see whether it can be applied elsewhere.
