HC Deb 03 February 1958 vol 581 c812
54. Mr. Swingler

asked the Paymaster-General if he will bring forward legislation to make it a condition of membership of the nationalised boards to which he makes appointments that other directorship and appointments be relinquished.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Power (Sir Ian Horobin)

No, Sir. My noble Friend does not appoint to a board anyone holding any outside appointment which he does not consider appropriate to a member of the board.

Mr. Swingler

How does the hon. Gentleman and the noble Lord know? Is not he aware of the widespread opinion that it is time to put an end to the danger of conflict between the private interest and public responsibility of those appointed to nationalised boards, and will not he reconsider his answer?

Sir I. Horobin

Recent events may have thrown some light on the activities of certain persons, but they certainly lend no support to the view that any part-time member of any board has done anything of which he would have any cause to be ashamed.
