HC Deb 03 February 1958 vol 581 cc801-2
38. Dr. King

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the net economy in 1958 resulting from the reduction in staff.

Mr. Godber

On 1st January, 1958, the non-industrial staff of the Department numbered 15,199. If this number were to fall, as we hope, by about 400 during 1958, the saving in salary costs would be of the order of £170,000. In addition, it is estimated that the reduction in the complement of the Ordnance Survey will result in a saving of £105,000 in 1958–59.

Dr. King

Does the Joint Parliamentary Secretary's figure make allowance for the gratuities which will have to be paid to the unestablished men whom he is dismissing? Can he calculate the value of the loss of trained and experienced personnel of whom he is willingly depriving himself by this action?

Mr. Godber

I do not think that the figure includes the gratuities, which would amount to about £30,000. It would be very difficult to assess the other figure to which the hon. Member referred.

Dr. King

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of these answers, I beg to give notice that I will raise the matter on the Adjournment at the earliest possible moment.
