11. Mr. Dugdale
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Republic of Guinea has now officially asked to come into the sterling area; and what reply Her Majesty's Government have given to the request.
The answer to the first part of the Question is, "No, Sir." The second part does not therefore arise.
Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that this is not a matter which can be decided by this country alone? Will he make it quite clear that this Government will welcome such a request; and, indeed, would welcome the closer association of Guinea with the Commonwealth?
The hon. Member asked whether such a request had been made and I said, "No." I am afraid that that is as far as I can go today.
