HC Deb 04 December 1958 vol 596 c1362
42. Sir F. Medlicott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will now give fresh consideration to the possibility of raising the age limit for service on juries, so as to enable more retired men and women to perform this valuable public service.

Mr. Renton

As my hon. Friend is aware, the change he proposes would require legislation, of which my right hon. Friend cannot hold out any prospect in the near future.

Sir F. Medlicott

Is my hon. and learned Friend aware that there is still weight in the argument which I put before the House some years ago as to the judgment, responsibility and intelligence of people over 60 years of age on juries? Would not juries be greatly strengthened by inclusion of people of their riper years and understanding?

Mr. Renton

Trial by jury is trial by good and lawful men and not trial by one's elders, even though they be one's betters.
