HC Deb 02 December 1958 vol 596 c1000
5. Miss Burton

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that there is still anxiety, both among the general public and the British Dental Association, about the claims made by some toothpaste manufacturers in their advertisements; and if he will consider taking action under the Merchandise Marks Acts.

Mr. J. Rodgers

I am aware of this anxiety, and, if the evidence is made available, my right hon. Friend will take the appropriate action.

Miss Burton

Since the Minister is a "new broom" at the Ministry, could he go a little further than others have gone in the past? Is he aware that I raised this matter about two years ago? Will he agree that it is flagrantly dishonest for any manufacturer of tooth paste to imply that it is not necessary to brush one's teeth often if his toothpaste is used, and should not something be done about this matter?

Mr. Rodgers

I was present during the debate when this matter was raised the other day. The Board of Trade is in touch with the British Dental Association on this particular matter, and, if there is evidence of an offence, manufacturers will be asked whether they have anything to say before any proceedings are taken.
