HC Deb 24 April 1958 vol 586 c1134
6. Mr. Grimond

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will abolish the tariffs on sulphate of ammonia and oilseeds.

Sir D. Eccles

If applications are made by users for the removal or alteration of any of these duties, I shall consider them.

Mr. Grimond

Are the Government never going to consider anything which is put to them by anybody else? It is extremely doubtful whether these duties now play any useful part. As we presumably want to reduce the cost of living, would it not be as well if the Government took the initiative?

Sir D. Eccles

I should have thought that it was a presumption that if the users are not sufficiently interested to ask for the duty to be removed it cannot be doing very much harm.
