HC Deb 16 April 1958 vol 586 cc155-6
41. Mr. Mikardo

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what change there has been in his plans for the future use of Stansted Airport.

Mr. Neave

None, Sir, but I am reviewing the question in the light of the development of Gatwick and the rapid increase in London's air traffic. Meanwhile, Stansted will continue to be used as a civil airport.

Mr. Mikardo

While appreciating that the hon. Gentleman has many difficult factors to take into account in his consideration of the matter, may I ask him if he will be good enough to bear in mind that, in the interests of those at present using the airport and those who work there, it is desirable that a clear statement should be made as quickly as possible?

Mr. Neave

I certainly appreciate what the hon. Gentleman says. I think he would agree that it is early to judge whether the development of Gatwick in its first stage will allow us to make a decision very soon, but we will certainly do our best.
