§ 16. Mr. A. Hendersonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the recent incidents on the Israel-Syrian border, he will instruct his representative at the United Nations to propose that detachments of the United Nations Emergency Force be stationed along the border; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Selwyn LloydNo, Sir.
§ Mr. HendersonWill the Foreign Secretary say whether it is true that the Syrians fired upon the United Nations' observation posts even though they were clearly marked? Would not he agree that these provocations become much more serious as a result of the fact that Syria now forms part of the United Arab Republic?
§ Mr. LloydI cannot answer the first part of the right hon. and learned Gentleman's supplementary question without notice, but I discussed this matter very fully with the Secretary-General of the United Nations when he was here, and he explained the situation and the steps which were being taken to remedy it. I think that those steps appear to have been successful. I give my answer to the right hon. and learned Gentleman in the light of my discussion with the Secretary-General.
