HC Deb 31 October 1957 vol 575 c373
7. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he has now received the report of the Food Standards Committee on improving the quality of bread.

Mr. Amory

No, Sir. I understand that it will be some time before the Committee can complete its inquiries.

Mr. Lipton

Can the Minister say how much longer the public will have to put up with this doped and steamed cotton wool passed off as white bread, which was referred to the Committee in May, 1956, and which is going to cost a shilling very soon and provide even more exorbitant profits for the milling and bakery combines?

Mr. Amory

I cannot accept the hon. Gentleman's description of the current breads available today. There has seldom been a wider variety of breads available. If he does not like white bread, there is plenty of brown bread.

Mr. Lipton

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the Adjournment.
