HC Deb 29 October 1957 vol 575 c4
5. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what further consideration he proposes to give to the construction of a road bridge over the Tay at Dundee in view of the uncertainty of the employment position in the city.

Mr. N. Macpherson

My right hon. Friend cannot say when the construction of a road bridge over the Tay at Dundee could be fitted into the road programme, but he has agreed with the local authorities concerned that there should be a joint examination with them of the technical questions involved.

Mr. Thomson

Is the Minister aware that unemployment in Dundee is five times worse than in the United Kingdom as a whole and that all the prospects are that it will grow even graver? Is not this the time to get a move on with the road bridge over the Tay at Dundee?

Mr. Macpherson

In reply to the first part of that question, unemployment has dropped a bit in the last month in Dundee. In reply to the second part of the question, we are getting on with the study of the technical problems involved.
