HC Deb 26 November 1957 vol 578 c983
39. Mr. Swingler

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how much has been allocated from Colonial Development and Welfare Funds to the Seychelles since 1950; and if he will publish a list of the schemes which have been undertaken as a result of these grants.

Mr. Profumo

The total sum available to the Seychelles Government from Colonial Development and Welfare funds since 1950 is £390,000. A list of the schemes made under the Colonial Development and Welfare Acts is published each year as a House of Commons Paper.

Mr. Swingler

Will the Under-Secretary of State check to ascertain whether anybody in the Colonial Office ever reads accounts of debates of the Legislative Council in the Seychelles, and, if so, whether attention has been drawn to the disgraceful housing and hospital conditions described in recent debates? Will his Department kindly take some action in this matter?

Mr. Profumo

I can certainly give the hon. Gentleman the assurance that these debates are regularly read. I do not accept the allegations which he has repeatedly made about the standard of administration in the Seychelles. They do neither the Seychelles nor himself any good.
