HC Deb 28 May 1957 vol 571 cc191-2
9. Wing Commander Bullus

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, whether the European Organisation for Nuclear Research has yet announced a research programme; and whether Her Majesty's Government has suggested any particular problems for study.

Mr. H. Nicholls

No research programme has yet been announced. The full research resources of the Organisation will only become available when the two accelerators are completed. The smaller accelerator is expected to be in operation late this summer. Full-scale research on it should commence by the end of the year and a research programme is now being worked out. Her Majesty's Government have suggested some problems for study.

Wing Commander Bullus

Would the Minister say who is responsible for agreeing the programme?

Mr. Nicholls

The working out of the research programme is the responsibility of the Director-General, but he has the advice, on the Scientific Policy Committee, of many eminent scientists, who include Sir John Cockcroft and Professor Blackett from the United Kingdom.
