HC Deb 28 May 1957 vol 571 cc188-9
4. Wing Commander Bullus

asked the Minister of Works if he is aware of the poor condition of many of the courtyards in the Palace of Westminster; and when he proposes to repair them.

Mr. H. Nicholls

I agree that some improvement in the condition of a number of courtyards is needed. Royal Court will be resurfaced in the long Recess. We hope to find money for other courtyards in subsequent years.

Wing Commander Bullus

Will my hon. Friend ensure that the condition of New Palace Yard is not allowed to deteriorate, in view of the heavy volume of traffic which it has to carry?

Mr. Nicholls

The surface of New Palace Yard has been attended to quite recently, and it will be looked at as and when necessary, but there is no suggestion at the moment of completely resurfacing it—certainly not until the work on the Arcade, to which my hon. Friend the Member for Watford (Mr. Farey-Jones) referred, is completed.
