§ 41. Mr. G. Thomasasked the Minister of Labour the number of registered unemployed persons in Cardiff at the latest convenient date; and the comparable figures for a year ago.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodThe number was 2,459 at 13th May, 1957, compared with 1,898 at 14th May. 1956.
§ Mr. ThomasIs the Minister satisfied that this is not a trend which is likely to develop? There is a great deal of anxiety in the city.
§ Mr. MacleodThe figures are, of course, higher than last year, but that is only part of the story. Last year, unemployment increased throughout the year without the normal seasonal improvement, whereas this year there is the encouraging feature of a very substantial seasonal improvement.
