HC Deb 15 May 1957 vol 570 cc402-3
58. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will introduce one-way working, temporarily at least, in Upper Berkeley Street, W.1, while it is obstructed by road works.

Mr. Nugent

No, Sir. We have consulted the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis and the St. Marylebone Borough Council and we agree that one-way working here is unnecessary. In any case, the works are now almost complete.

Mr. Russell

While I am glad to hear that the works are almost complete, may I ask whether my hon. Friend would not agree that in a street in which there is roam for only one line of traffic, it is rather silly to have traffic in the opposite direction trying to get past at the same time?

Mr. Nugent

There was just room for two lanes of traffic, and we felt that it was in the general interest of traffic flow to keep the street as a two-way traffic street.
