HC Deb 13 May 1957 vol 570 cc33-4
60. Mr. M. Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will introduce legislation to repeal the censorship of plays exercised by the Lord Chamberlain.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department and Lord Privy Seal (Mr. R. A. Butler)

No, Sir.

Mr. Lipton

Is not the Home Secretary aware that, for the comparatively small sum of 5s., anyone joining a club can evade this ridiculous, outdated censorship exercised by the Lord Chamberlain? Does he not realise that if the Government surrender on this issue they will get very much more public support than on other surrenders that are likely to take place in the not too distant future?
